Patient Appointment Booking and Medical Records Portal
Patients still book appointments by phone, carry paper records between providers, and lose track of their own medical history, while clinics burn staff time on scheduling logistics. This project builds a patient portal that brings those workflows online in one secure, role-aware application. The intern develops the portal on an Express and Node.js backend with PostgreSQL, modeling patients, doctors, appointments, and medical records relationally. Patients register, book and manage appointments, upload medical reports through secure file handling, and message their doctors; doctors manage availability and review patient files; role-based access keeps every record visible only to the people entitled to see it. The frontend uses Next.js, React, and TypeScript with Tailwind CSS to make these flows clear and accessible for users of all ages, with authentication protecting every session. The intern learns to design relational schemas for interdependent healthcare entities, implement authorization that mirrors real clinical privacy expectations, and handle sensitive documents safely. Completing the project demonstrates fullstack competence in exactly the kind of regulated, trust-critical domain where careful engineering matters most.
